How to Buy a Mesh Wi-Fi System

Get whole-home coverage without the upfront hit by timing your purchase and using a long intro window.

Typical cost $450 before anything else
Across the 0% window $25.00/mo 18 months, no interest

How we got that: $450 spread evenly across the 18-month introductory window on the Citi Simplicity® Credit Card. Checked · at the bank Carry a balance past the window and the standard APR applies to what is left.

Good Wi-Fi is about coverage, not just speed. A mesh system uses multiple nodes to kill dead zones so you can actually use the internet you pay for. If you buy a high-end kit now, it should last five to seven years before the tech feels old.

Don't chase the newest Wi-Fi 7 models unless you have a dozen brand-new devices. Last year's top-tier Wi-Fi 6E mesh systems are the sweet spot for most of us. They get cheaper every time a newer version launches. We can use that cycle to get a better deal.

The 18-month window is a hard deadline, not free money. If you still owe a balance when it ends, you will start paying the standard interest rate on whatever is left.

The steps

  1. 01

    Map your dead zones

Walk around your house with a speed test app. Figure out where the signal drops so you know if you need two nodes or three. Most $450 kits come with three units.

  2. 02

    Wait for the refresh

Router companies usually announce new gear at big tech shows in January or June. Prices on current models usually drop right after those announcements. Keep an eye on the older flagship models.

  3. 03

    Split the cost

Use the Citi Simplicity® Credit Card (Citi) to handle the bill. It offers 0% for 18 months on purchases and balance transfers from date of account opening. If you spend $450, you just pay $25.00 a month to clear it before the interest starts.

  4. 04

    Hardwire the backhaul

If your house has Ethernet jacks in the walls, plug the nodes into them. This is called wired backhaul, which means the nodes talk to each other over a wire instead of using up wireless airtime. It makes everything faster.

  5. 05

    Placement is everything

Put your nodes in the open, not in a cabinet. They need to see each other to work well. Keep them about two rooms apart for the best results.

  6. 06

Check the card terms before you commit

Every figure we publish for the Citi Simplicity® Credit Card carries the date a person verified it against Citi and a link to where they checked. Intro windows and APRs change without notice, so confirm the current terms before applying.

Common questions

Is Wi-Fi 7 worth it?

Probably not yet. Most phones and laptops can't even use the new speeds, so you're paying for potential rather than performance. Stick with 6E for now.

Can I mix different brands?

Usually no. Mesh systems work best when every node is from the same manufacturer. If you buy a specific brand, you're locked into their app and hardware.

Do I still need my modem?

Yes. The mesh system replaces your old router, but you still need the box from your internet provider to bring the signal into the house. You can usually put their box in bridge mode to make it work.

What happens after 18 months?

The 0% interest period on the Citi Simplicity® Credit Card (Citi) ends. Any balance left over starts accruing interest at the regular rate, which is usually quite high.
